These are some basic commands that we use in the training of our puppies & dogs. These are both Voice and Hand Signal commands. Training is a key part to owning a puppy and we recommend that you do everything possible to achieve this goal. We are sure that if you use these tools that we have provided you will have a great, loving relationship with your newest family member. If you have any questions about any training needs please feel free to contact us. HEEL: With puppy at your left leg, step forward and say the command HEEL. If he runs ahead don’t hold him back, wait for the leash to pull tight then tell him HEEL as you make a sharp U turn to the right. Praise him as he comes up along side you. A perfect heel is when you and your dog are walking side by side. SIT: Have your right hand, palm up, move your hand up and say SIT at that same time pulling up on the leash. You need him to sit when putting his collar on & off. STAY: Say the command STAY as you put your foot in front of puppy and swing your right hand in front of his face with your palm facing him. After giving the command to stay take a step or two back while still in front of your puppy. If he moves bring him to the position he was and gently remind him to sit and repeat the stay command. DOWN: Start with puppy in the sitting position then say the command DOWN while your right hand moves downward. Your hand must be flat, palm down. Gently pull the leash down and apply pressure on his withers. (Shoulders) This command should be followed with a STAY. COME: Say the command COME, take your right hand palm facing you and bring it toward your chest. You should never use the command COME when disciplining your puppy. OFF: Off is used when your puppy jumps up to greet people, or on the furniture if you don’t want him up there. Do not use the command DOWN to get your puppy off of you or the furniture. When saying OFF put your hand out palm down over puppies head and move you hand in a downward position. LEAVE IT: When you don’t want your puppy to sniff something, bite something, chew something or eat something use the command LEAVE IT. Repeat this command if your puppy continues. Wave your right hand as if you where using the baseball term SAFE. DROP IT: If your puppy has an object in his mouth that he is not to have tell him to DROP IT. If the puppy does not drop it, go to him and gently remove the object from his mouth while repeating the command DROP IT. Replace this object with something that he can chew on. THAT'S ENOUGH: This command is used with excessive crying or barking. KENNEL UP: Open the kennel door & say KENNEL UP. A puppy considers your family his PACK; he will want to be with you whenever possible. He wants human companionship even though he will have to be left alone sometimes. Your puppy has been crate trained and is used to being alone at times. Your puppy will need to some reassurance. Make sure he has safe toys in his crate to play and chew on. If he starts whining or crying testing you like all children do just give the command THAT'S ENOUGH then praise him when he settles down. GO POTTY: When you take your puppy out to relieve himself give the command GO POTTY. This in time will shorten your time outside when you need him to go potty. TAKE A BREAK: When you are done training your puppy use the command TAKE A BREAK. This will allow your puppy to know that he can play freely on or off leash. On all of these commands it is key to follow through and praise your puppy continuously if he is obeying your commands! |
